Mr Strong compiled a superb exhaustive concordance which I have used over the last ten years of ministry.
So - according to Strong - the definition of rest from the Greek here is

Gr. sabbatismos, a Sabbath rest, a rest from all work (Heb_4:9; R.V., "sabbath"), a rest like that of God when he had finished the work of creation.

Not that I'm comparing my work with that of God, but the Lord does tell us to rest from work in order to be refreshed. I've felt strongly for many years about the principle of working from rest rather than resting from work. To this end, during the Summer months our fellowship meets only once on Sundays to allow more quality time with family and friends during the good weather and light nights. Then in the Autumn we return to our activities refreshed and eager.

I've been the pastor at Elgin since March 99 plus about three years in fairly hands-on eldering prior to that. Not very long really when you read about other pastors and ministers who serve for decades....but that's them and I'm a bit wussy in comparison.

However, last March I felt I needed a sabbatical, but for various reasons it didn't happen. Now almost eight years into my pastoral career, I 'hit a wall' last Sunday.
Thankfully I have an excellent team around me and it was agreed that I should have a rest.

So as of Sunday last I'm now on sabbatical.IN rest!

The lead up was so strange. I wanted to keep going but had a sense of nothing in me with which to carry on. I felt as though I was letting people down, running away, copping out etc. I'm at peace now, knowing that I've a long stretch ahead of me in which I can seek the Lord because I want to do so rather than just prepare for leading, speaking, guiding etc.

Already this morning I was able to take a lonnnnnnnnngggggggggggg time over my devotionals, sharing with the Mem Sahib as I did so, followed up with some light and often entertaining reading in the study and on the net.

I'll be spending a lot more time with my two daughters and respective hubbies as well as visiting some of the other fellowships in my area.

I'm really looking forward to seeking a deeper life in Jesus than I've ever known before, and I'm excited that this may be the time.

Pix free Zone!

I can't believe it but I got through a whole holiday break and didn't take one photograph!
The Mem Sahib is to blame. Just after the Carol Service on Christmas Eve she turned a strange pale Chartreuse colour and retired to PoorlyLand. It was a very cunning manouevre on her part since that left me with the lion's share of the catering duties, but it was not unknown territory.I got much assistance form two lovely daughters. But I just forgot to record all those interesting little moments as various folks opened gifts, pulled strange faces, played odd little games with even stranger equipment and props. Good job I've got a reasonable memory.
So poor old Mem Sahib was functioning at a much lower level than her norm. The upshot has been a rather pedestrian but very restful break. I returned to work today greatly refreshed to find hardly any work to do. And so I've come home early to catch up on blogging but also to climb comfortably back into Isaiah! I'm reading through - as you do - and have got to those wonderful chapters in the late 30's and 40's where you really see the grace of God towards man. Despite the huge efforts that man makes in constructing false idols [ cf molten gods ... and you must have a rough idea how much effort it takes to make a cast statue of anything - think it through ] the Lord is still prepared to forgive and bless when we give it all up to become His.

I've been asked to do a baby blessing this weekend. Not a church family, but the bay of the sister of my son in law. These are interesting affairs, not a full bodied dedication but I find it encouraging that there is still a desire in the hearts of many parents to involve themselves with spiritual things in moments of great blessing or crisis. These blessing services are very intimate affairs. As the minister, I'm invited right into the centre of the family, I get to tell them how much God loves children and by extension - THEM too! I get to deliver a samll message, bless a new life and possibly even set someone forward into a commitment to engage with the Lord at some new level for them. Then there's the questions afterwards and also the future divine appointments when I meet a family member and am able to take up where I left off. What opportunities! What openings we have if we make ourselves available..
What a blessing!

So here I am in the study, reading Isaiah and also prayerfully considering the people I'm going to be with that Saturday morning, hoping that I hear from the Lord so that they can too.

A ticket to ride! The Law won!

I got a speeding ticket the other day.

It really wasn’t my fault. I’d been driving like a good boy for a while, enjoying my A4 Avant 1.9tdi.
It’s really cool, quiet and economical at 60mph. I enjoy watching the trip computer stay up around 80-90mpg as I soar and swoop at a steady 55-60mph.

On this day however, I needed to be somewhere near Elgin. I was driving from work in Buckie along the A98. The main route between Fraserburgh on the extreme East of Scotland and the A96 [ the main Aberdeen to Inverness road ] which makes the A98 a MAJOR traffic artery for East West traffic. This road is well laid out, has two lanes, lots of bends but nothing serious or dangerous that can’t be negotiated at a steady 50 – 60. The speed limit for this road is 60mph.

As is very often the case in Moray, we have a plague of drivers who insist on forming convoys which travel at 40 – 50mph. This means they slow down to 30- 40 on the bends and seem incapable of speeding back up to warp 1 afterwards.

So on the day in question Officer, I overtook some of these snails, reaching 71 mph in order to use a particular opportunity before crawling into a bendy forest section which might have necessitated these ‘drivers’ stopping for a surveyor’s report on the state of the bends!
Sadly my manoeuvre occurred right in front of a mobile camera van!

It is impossible to contest the fine – I broke the law.
It is impossible to do anything other than admit the case and pay up.
It is also impossible to do anything about crawlers .

Why?
Why can there not be a speed minimum imposed on certain vital sections of road which are shared by people with time constraints as well as those with barely a pulse?
So my wrongdoings have caught up with me.
My fine will wipe out all my fuel economy savings over the past months.

But I still get to drive a great motor round some of the world’s best country listening to some excellent music and teaching messages.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://worldzend.blogspot.com/2006/12/ticket-to-ride-law-won.html' title='A ticket to ride! It was a beautiful night anyway with a gusty wind which would carry our voices and a sharp clear night with stars and a cracking atmosphere.
There would have been about 16 - 20 of us including teenagers, and we all greatly enjoyed being together and singing out of our love for the Lord and our desire to bless this community.
For those of you that don't know Scotland, we live in an area which is difficult to reach, not through persecution, not through aggressive response, not because of anything other than an apparent indifference. People seem completely unmoved - until you either wait for them to make the opening, or till you touch a sensitive area in their own being. The latter seems to be the only way to reach out. To do this you need to be in relationship and open with folks.
We had many people coming to their windows, children receiving sweeties, many folk just listening, a couple paused on their way past. As we moved between locations, a young single mum and her friend had been stood on the kitchen doorstep - listening.
On being greeted with a "Merry Christmas!" she declared that our "carols had made it seem like a real Christmas" for her - "at last!"
Hopefully we can continue to get alongside these lovely but damaged folks with our toddler groups, dance groups and 'Kettle's On' coffee times.
One thing's for sure - they're ready and open it seems.

Men, Ministers and Mrs's on a Mission

Louise & I went to a ministers meeting yesterday in Inverness. The kind of meeting where pastors and leaders from several different denominations meet together not just to talk shop but also to network and more importantly PRAY for the collective work of us all. The organisation is called People With A Mission Ministries [ PWAMM ] and meets in Perth and Inverness and soon in Aberdeen.
One hot topic was the forthcoming Seasonal Advert on Scottish ITV and it’s viewing schedule. Please pray for Scotland since over 2.7 million people may well see this ad.
God is most definitely moving in his pastors.
Hopefully we will point the sheep in the right direction.

Usually I don't really enjoy these kind of gatherings. I suppose it's an attitude thing again, plus the fact that over my life and career, 'meetings' don't seem to do much. However, yesterday I had a minor head cold and was a little detached from the proceedings. But the Lord wasn't detached from me. I had a succession of those little nudges that I've come to consider as God-prompts, one of which re-visited a prophecy spoken over my ministry back in 2001, another confirming an initiative in which I'm currently involved.

I love the way the Lord never wastes anything we give to Him.

Journeying moments

Last Sunday I had the great privilege of speaking at a church in Glasgow.
This meant my whole day was filled with doing great things. Sunday always are for me but the driving component is woefully short. But last Sunday I got to get up early - as usual. Drive into the dawn with the the sunlight bathing the snowy mountains in that rich golden pinky light that I'm certain only occurs in Scotland. Barrelling down the A9 with magnificent vista unfolding all round me. Then I get to the Revival Evangelical Mission International Church of God in Sighthill and meet up with my friend Pastor Ambakise Mwafula and just really enjoy prayerful fellowship, great praise, great time sharing my heart and then a special time at my friend's home talking shop. Then I got to drive home through the wonderful countryside all over again. This time into the dusk!
My fellowship has made an audio recording of the New Testament [ KJV ] which we call "Faith comes by Hearing". So to have the fun of driving and listening to the Word as I drive through the land. MmmmmMMMMMM! God is so good!
This week has been difficult for me with too much coming too quickly on occasions but in the last moments of my drive home today, again I got an overwhelming sense of God's presence and love which just lifted my mood, re-directed my thought processes and turned my heart even more to Him.

Isa 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee.

Thank you Lord!

A nice break - Part Two

I can't believe how long it's been since I last had the time to blog.
However, I'm going to finish off the testimonial about mine and the Mem Sahib's break WAY back in mid October.
You may [ or may not ] recall the first part were I had a wonderful experience driving some superb cars. That was a tiring time believe it or not. But once that was over, we headed back into the real world of family and fellowship, heading up to the North West to stay with our new outlaws, John and Hil Hutchison in Aintree.
I bless the Lord for the quality of outlaws he has given us, firstly with Willie and Moira Duncan and now with John & Hil.
Hospitality has been re-defined for me. It was just like going home or back to friends we've known for decades. After a long journey, you just want get your slippers on and have a cuppa - don't you? That's just what happened. Then we gassed the time away like you wouldn't believe.
This is only the third time we've been together and one of those was the 'heightened reality wedding experience' when you know you're deep in a vortex of events that won't let you go till it's all over.... But what a way to relax, letting your conversation roam from family to faith and back again. Even politics couldn't ruin the evening!!!
Next day we went to church with the Hutches, to St Peter's a 20th Century Anglican church on the periphery of a housing scheme. It was Reader's Day, the service very warm and intimate, and just as the communion lesson was being read, I felt as if the Lord just showed me a timeline of my life and how often He had been upholding me, alongside me, blessing me all through my life from being a choir boy to being a pastor. It was one of those tangible experiences which you know in your knower that He is and will be very near. Sweet!
So next day we got the tour of Liverpool.
Here's an end view of 'The Three Graces' soon to be blocked up by a new museum. Dockland here is very interesting with so much to see. It reminded a lot of my childhood, visiting Hull on a regular basis. We went on a city tour that afternoon which ended with an amphibious trip through several docks in a DUKW!
Note the cranes in the piccy below. Every where you look in Liverpool it seems that a building is sprouting!

Also visited the amazing
Cathedral of Christ the King.
Architecture has always held a fascination for me,
so this place was a real treat. The interior is both vibrant and peaceful....and the accoustics ! Well, I just wanted to sing praises!! So I did - but quietly and in a corner, amazed to hear how my voice carried even so.

Note the huge crown of thorns repeated both inside and outside the building.

Next day it was adieu to Liverpool, but I know we'll be back.
So we took a short hop up to the Lakes, stopping off at the amazing sub-terranean shopping mall called Regedh. They have nice loos and a very good tourist info-point. We made sure that the Ullswater ferries were running, then drove to the south of the Lake. Here we parked at Glenridding then walked up the east side to Howtown - 7.5 miles -

and caught the ferry back.

This ferry was first commissioned in 1889 and still in beautiful condition.

Yes - that is heat haze.... pic taken whilst we walked during the afternoon.
On arrival back at Glenridding the rain began to fall getting steadily heavier. We had miscalculated how much hard cash we had & so were unable to find any B&B's. Circumstance forced us to take shelter in the Glenridding Hotel where we managed to cheer oursleves up with a hot shower and a fine evening meal.
The following day saw us wend our merry way home - rejoicing!

Since then it's been business as usual. I'm not sure how often I'll be blogging. That was always my problem beforehand. Time and the fact that I'd rather read one than post one. Everyone else's blog seems so witty and eloquent, the blogger so much more well read than I.
But that's a bit more of my life outed. And the Lord continues to bless me real good.

A nice break. Part One

We've been home for a few days now, but I'm still feeling the effects of a really relaxing time away with only the Mem-Sahib for company on our sojourn South to Englandshire. At the risk of incurring a rabid invitation to indulge in voluntary repatriation...it was good to be 'darn Sarf' for a while.
Been visiting my mother-in-law who is attending a bible college in Walsall. She's certainly game for her age, having marginally exceeded her three score years and ten! Jo has thrown herself into student life with gusto and looks real well on it. What an encouragement to those of you out there thinking of tackling education as a matured mature student!!! Jo is at the Charis Bible College and they are looking after her real fine. Many thanks to Tom and Lesley Decker.
We also took almost a whole morning in Walsall Art Gallery. Fab sculptures and an Ace Building. Sadly I was too interested in the place to take any pix. If you're reading this and you live within an hour's drive and you like art and architecture - GO! Even the views from the gallery windows fit in with the displays ...... 'stonishin'!
{I really must learn to embed the links using the icon-diddly in the toollybar}

So - on we went from there to cadge some overnight accommodation from Rob & Jo in Coventry prior to heading off to Bruntingthorpe for my 50th Birthday Present - A Driving Experience!!!
Way back in March, when in Sevilla, celebrating Fran's 21st and my 50th, my ladies had clubbed together with the fellahs and bought me a track day! Finally the day had arrived and dawned - mistily...... But the fog didn't stop the fun!

Behold the Misty Ferrari 360...sorry, maybe that should read mighty. It certainly handled well and sounded great, but it was the first car I drove and I reckon I was a bit intimidated by it and the flappy paddle change and the fact that the instructor told me not to thrash it ....

Next up was the SuperBrutal Impreza... a prodrive spec too so Man Alive it was a right scorcher. It's not often you get a neck ache changing up from 3rd to 4th but this machine just flew round.
The accelaration is so fierce I spent most of my time getting out of the back seat. Many, many thanx to Banzai Barry the instructor for showing me so much in just ten minutes.
I can't wait to get the 'bends' again!!!

But then.....
Oh then!!!!
Then !!!!!
I got to realise the dream of decades.

                                                                 The Porsche 911.

This really was me! Truly a car of poise and sophistication with such a wonderful sound, and feel and ............and..........and........

So that brought me to my last experience of the day... Mad Malcolm and the Lotus Elise!

This little beauty turned out to be the fun - highlight of the day. For sure the other cars were wonderful experiences, but sweet little Elise - what a chav! Thunderous racket, point and squirt handling, mental companion - what a time was had. A completely different box of cogs and so affordable! I've already been on the AutoTrader site..... first of all I need to encourage the Mem to trade in the Ibiza......

But wait a mo..... what's this Deuteronomy 5:16

My elderly dad, aged 76, had a wee spill from his pushbike on Saturday.
That sentence doesn't really do the situation justice. Dad is not only elderly, he's also fiercely independent, given over to 'setting the world to rights' [ and that's being delicate about it!! ] and his pushbike is actually a custom built racing bicycle. Dad only gave up competitive racing two years ago!!
It seems he had a black out whilst riding a quiet country road, doing a couple of somersaults as he came to rest at the side of the road. Concussed but shaken, he was taken to the local hospital and kept in overnight for observation, released home on Sunday lunchtime to the care of my mum.
So I've been engaged in active care for a change. Parental independence has meant I was often the last to know that there had been any problem. Now I reckon Dad is prepared to let me help out rather more. I hope so because relationship can only work when we give access to those with whom we wish to relate.
It's not been easy for Dad and I over the years, two competitive people trying to hold very differing opinions. It seems now we can move to a deeper level rather than the detached joshing round which characterises most masculine conversations, never mind the ones I had with my dad.
All this has really brought home to me the fuller implications of honouring my father and mother in accordance with the Lord's plan for my life. Honouring isn't just about respect, it's also about tenderness and ministry, care and maintenance, need and response.
Loving parents isn't always easy. As a parent I know how much of a frustration I can be to my own girls, my parents are no different. But real, selfless love transcends difficulty and discomfort because we reckon that the recipients are worth it.
However - honouring it seems is a whole new ball game.
Or is it another aspect of real love?

I'm not too sure why I'm posting this. I do know that when I got the phone call about Dad in Accident & Emergency and I considered the worst case scenario, I realised that it might have been rather too late for honour.

Better late than never. I write this after spending some quality time today with my parents, helping them bring their routine back to order. I feel good not just because it's a rush to help out and be appreciated, but because the Lord says that when we do things His way, we'll be more fulfilled.

Deu 5:16 Honor your father and your mother, as Jehovah your God has commanded you, so that your days may be made longer, and that it may go well with you in the land which Jehovah your God gives you.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://worldzend.blogspot.com/2006/10/honor-your-father-and-your-mother-as.html' title='Honor your father and your mother, as God has commanded you... What I want to tell you about is how easily I bought two tyres for my Audi Avant this week.
Think about how most of us carry out this simple task.
We recognise that the balding wellies on the car are not only dangerous but illegal and it's time we did something about it. So you phone all your local tyre dealers with the size and speed rating and they quote you for the brands in stock, their special offers and/or the brands they want you to buy. It's never the same brands but eventually you get an overlap and two outlets quote you for the same tyre. Then you find out when the job can be done, drive down there, sit for a while [ never less than thirty minutes ] or go and do anything you can for the waiting time. But basically you're locked into their routine.

Well this week the Mem Sahib had spotted one of those glossy flyers in the weekly free newspaper...and it was advertising a service by a company called e-tyres.
So I did the usual, got my quote THEN I went on to the e-tyres site ( http://www.etyres.co.uk/ ) entered in the tyre size and speed rating, hit the return button, scrolled down to the tyre make I wanted, selected quantity, went through the 'pay cycle' and then two hours later took the phone call telling me that the tyres were in stock and ASKING ME when and where would I like them fitted! Since my day off is Friday and I'm building a rockery the answer was Friday morning at my home. And that is exactly what happened. On Friday morning, I got another phone call from e-tyres at 8.45 confirming the time of fitting and the rest is history. John turned up with a megaVan full of tyresome kit and did the job in thirty minutes while I continued with my life.
The bonus - I also saved about Thirty pounds on the cheapest quote I'd had.
Nice One e-tyres !

Look who's back.....

The HoneyMooners have returned.

They appear to have a great time in Kenya, despite the services [sic] of First Choice!
It appears that when you book with First Choice, if they experience a delay of any kind, they are not responsible for either assisting you with onward connections or even telling you that YOU need to safeguard your onward connection. Sometimes these locums would be late middle aged, semi retired pharmacists who filled in here and there to help out. Grateful though I was, I never felt they could really cut the mustard any more, as evidenced by the notes they left behind warning me of dissatisfied customers, missed opportunities, unavailable stock lines - all of which I rectified within two coffee breaks of my return.

I'm now a semi-retired pharmacist, occasionally filling in so that some young buck can clear off and enjoy themself at resort or conference, leaving yours truly to mind the store.
I now leave notes and unfinished jobs in my wake, secure in the knowledge that when the proprietor returns, all will be sorted out within a couple of coffee breaks.

Funny old thing - life!

Healthy Living ? Moving to the Groove !

Today I've been working through some medication reviews, particularly looking at patients who are overweight, obese or even criminally obese!! Sorry the latter should read clinically. It amazes me that no matter how much support and encouragement some people get and no matter how critical their health status becomes, they won't take any action.
I know about the difficulties in inducing change and also stabilising those changes - I've had to make a few myself. But it still amazes me how little some people will do for themselves.

Heaven knows I'm one to talk.
I don't do 30 minutes moderate exercise on 5 days a week.
I don't walk 10,000 paces a day.
Both current examples of the minimum exercise requirements to maintain good health.

I am trying to lose 10kg of weight - this will significantly lower ALL my risks of having a serious cardio-vascular event within the next few decades.

What I need to do now is work out how I can work in a 'work out' into my workin' week!

I suppose it's all a question of self motivation... but I'm too happy with the things I'm doing with my time and too busy trying to eat the right things some of the rest of the time. The bits in between seem to be at the wrong time to do the right things with the rest of my time so that all of my time will become the kind of time that glows with health for much of my time remaining....
.... I think that's enough of that.

Anyway - I've had my bowl of muesli for lunch, cut my lunch break down to 15 minutes so that I can blog this in the last part before going back to my daily tasks of looking after OTHER people's health better than I do my own!

Doh!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://worldzend.blogspot.com/2006/09/healthy-living-moving-to-groove.html' title='Healthy Living ? I'd given up for a while due mainly to time pressures of studying for my pharmacy professional development programme - hard at my age - and the usual timetable of work, home, church and meetings. Not to mention holidays etc.
Those of you who visited with me will remember my fanaticism for my family, especially when my elder daughter was married back in Feb 2005. Well, now my younger daughter Frances has just married so once the dust has settled on the empty nest, I'll be posting all sorts of blogualities and trivia. I'll have to learn all over again how to embed some links so that you too can visit some of my fave blogs.
Anyway, here's a photo from Fran & Peter's wedding which took place on Saturday September 2nd at Duffus Church, followed by a reception at the Eight Acres Hotel, Elgin. The evening blended into a full scale Scottish Ceilidh with the blogtastic band "ARoara".
I'm going to try and upload more pix when I've
a) learned how to place them where I want them and
b) refined them a bit by taking out red-eye, unwanted background distractions and mutants.

So, that's me back in BloggyLand.
Hope to catch you soon.

Yz
Dave
